Gearing Up for the New Semester!

Hey Everyone!!

I hope everyone had a fun and relaxing holiday season, I know I did! But with the close of the anticipated holidays comes a daunting thought, the start of the next semester. However, the week or two before a semester starts are kind of my favorite. You have the anticipation of a new semester, and I am actually find it exciting making plans to make this my “best semester yet”. Granted, I know this feeling will only last until the middle of the first class, I enjoy these weeks nonetheless.
Next semester will be my last semester before I take my APRN boards (yikes!!!). I will be taking “care of populations at high risk” along with clinical rotations. I am more excited for this course than others (here’s looking at you, pediatrics), because I feel well-versed with this population of older individuals with chronic diseases (heyyyyy MICU nurse). It will be challenging, of course, but this semester is exciting because at the end of it I get to take the boards!

So here is a couple of my favorite tips on how to gear up for a new semester!

Plan, plan, plan!
I find the more pre-planning of my semester I do, the more apt I am to be able to fit in the fun things I want to do. For example, I know I want to head up to Boston at the end of February for my best friend’s birthday, so writing it down in my planner first will visually remind me that I need to make sure all my work is done for that week before then, leaving me time to relax while I am away.
I also dig through my syllabus extensively before the semester starts and make sure all important assignments, school events, and exams are easily visible on my monthly calendar so nothing sneaks up on me last minute.
I use a Lilly Pulitzer Agenda in medium. I like these planners because it gives me a clear monthly calendar, as well as weekly calendars to plan out my days more specifically.

Shopping!
Does a new semester even exist if you don’t buy new school supplies??? This is by far my favorite part of a new semester. Picking out a new binder and dividers for my classes, as well as sprucing up my office area with some new pieces always invigorates me and motivates me to get studying! I haven’t gone shopping yet, but I am definitely going to splurge on a new set of my favorite pens, the Paper-mate Inkjoy Gen 0.7 pens. They come in so many pretty colors, and write so smoothly, they make writing notes and papers (slightly) more enjoyable, and every bit counts!!

Cleaning!
I like to make sure I am starting a new semester with a blank slate. Making sure my bedroom and office are organized and spruced up before a semester helps me enter the year with a calm attitude. Walking into a pretty area that I designed to study allows me to feel more relaxed and puts my mind in the right state to get down to business. Making sure everything I might need is at arms length and organized in my office is key. I also find it cathartic cleaning and organizing and throwing out things that I don’t need anymore.

Reminiscing!
Along the lines of cleaning, I enjoy going through old notes and papers while I am organizing my office before the start of each semester. Looking back at past classes and work that I’ve done reminds me of how far I have come since I have started the program. I am on year 3 of 4 and the time has really flown by. Sometimes, I feel like I am just squeaking by without actually learning anything, but when I take the time to look back at all the work I’ve done, it reminds the that slow and steady wins the race and before I know it I am going to be totally done!

So those are my favorite things to do while gearing up for a new semester, I hope you enjoyed it! I feel like this is also applicable for general new years organization! I think its important for us to take a moment every few months, reorganize, and restart. With everyone’s busy schedules, pressing the “restart” button every now and again couldn’t hurt, right?!

Go-To Hairstyle for Work (and a Thanksgiving reflection!)

Hey Everyone!
I hope everyone is enjoying their week! I have a lot to do this week but I am trying to find little moments in the day and enjoy myself. For the past two months I have been really trying to do this more and more.. not huge things but just taking a few minutes longer to do something that I know will make me feel better later on. For example, I have really been trying to take the time to dry and straighten my hair after I wash it, every time. I am usually super lazy and don't want to take the time to do it, but I hate the way my hair looks when I don’t dry it, so I have been really making the extra effort, and I can really tell a difference with my overall mood and confidence!
Speaking of hair, I wanted to do a post today about a quick, go to hairstyle I like to wear when I work at the hospital. I hate having hair in my face during the day and I hate having to fuss about it when I am trying to do other things, so this hairstyle is perfect for me!!
Braids are always a good way to maintain your hair and they usually do a good job of staying put for a while (hello, 12-hour shift), while still looking cute and put together.
I am not the world’s best hairdresser (by any means, my sister can attest to that), but I have definitely been able to up my hair game by researching different styles and learning how to do them on YouTube! Just search what you’re looking for and I am sure you wont be disappointed with the “how- to” results!

On another note, I hope everyone had such a fun Thanksgiving filled with family, friends, love and delicious meals! I had to work on Thanksgiving and was planning on needing to forgo my family traditional Thanksgiving dinner that my parents host at our house. Our managers arranged to have a full Thanksgiving dinner delivered to our unit. It was fun to celebrate this holiday with my work family and the meal was actually super delicious (there was SO much food). However, while at work our census dropped and we were able to send 4 nurses home at 3 pm, and I was one of them!! I called my family and they were so excited. When I got home around 4 pm, it turns out everyone postponed the meal (we usually eat at 2:30) to wait until I got there! I barely had the heart to tell them I had already eaten (but of course I indulged in some more turkey and mashed potatoes!)
It was such a nice gesture of them to ensure that I was included in the meal. When I entered my house, the love was tangible, and it really helped me appreciate the wonderful family I am blessed to be a part of.

Now, it is officially acceptable for me to listen to Christmas music!! Get ready for plenty of Christmas and winter themed posts in the near future! (especially once my finals are done on December 7th!)

Sunday Wrap-Up 10/23

Happy Sunday Everyone!
This week was a pretty great one! I felt very productive in general this week and was able to get a lot of work done and errands that needed to get done. Here’s my weekly wrap-up of things I’ve been loving this week!!

What I’m WearingMy favorite fall color this year is definitely cranberry. I have loved this color for a while but I found a pair of cranberry jeans at Ann Taylor Loft this year that I am absolutely loving. I love that I can dress them up or down, I have been wearing them super casually, or with a nicer top and jacket for clinical.

What I’m Watching: 90-day fiancé. Such a new guilty pleasure. I’ve never watched it before but I am watching the current season on-demand. It is so funny! Such an easy show to binge watch. I definitely want to go back and watch previous seasons. My favorite couple is George and Anfisa, I just feel so bad for poor Georgie, but girl knows what she wants, and its $10,000 dollars a month… haha.

What I’m Listening To: This month is a little sad for me on the Taylor Swift front. She usually releases an album every other year in October, but she did not this year. Totally fine, you do you girl and take a break, but I’m feeling a void this month that can only be filled by new Taylor. But old Taylor will have to suffice for now, so I’ve been listening to her old albums and rediscovering some old gems that I almost forgot about! Current faves: Stay Beautiful, All Too Well and The Story of Us.

What I’m Doing: This week was so weird weather-wise. 2 days were literally 80 degrees outside, and now its in the 40s and I had to turn the heat on. The warm days were fun to be able to go out and explore. I walked around with my friend and we even got ice cream cones one day!
I was pretty busy this week with school and work, but was able to relax this weekend and have fun which was nice. My sister had a bunch of her college friends down on Saturday and we went to a couple of vineyards before we went back to her house and literally sang karaoke all night (right up my alley). I won’t go into a lot of details of the night, but let’s just say there was broken wine glasses everywhere (I swear I didn’t break any though… good for me!).
I am so excited for this upcoming week, since it is the week leading up to Halloween!! I still have no
idea what I am going to dress up as but definitely need to figure that out this week!

Hope everyone has a great week!
